Britney Spears wants to clear the air after claims that she was body-shaming fellow pop star Christina Aguilera dominated social media this week.

Spears said she wasn’t trying to criticize Aguilera’s “beautiful body” in an Instagram post shared Tuesday in which she wrote, “I found there was only one way to look thin: hang out with fat people. My dancers … I mean if I had Christina Aguilera’s dancers I would have looked extremely small … I mean why not talk about it ??

Her comments were accompanied by a quote from late comedian Rodney Dangerfield that read, “I found there was only one way to look thin: hang out with fat people.”

In the wake of her controversial statement, Aguilera reportedly unfollowed Spears.

Meanwhile, fans took to the comments section of Spears’ Instagram page to lambaste the pop star.

“This quote didn’t age well,” one person commented, with another adding, “This is low and you’re clearly not okay. I hope you choose to seek help and truly heal.”

One commentator admonished Spears, advising her to “delete this” with various others sharing how “disappointed” they were with her remarks.

But in a follow-up message, Spears responded to the backlash saying that she wasn’t trying to body-shame her former Mickey Mouse Club co-star.

“By no means was I being critical of Christina’s beautiful body, it is what it is !!!” the Toxic singer, 40, insisted in an Instagram post that features an illustration of two fairies holding hands.

“I flew to see her show once and the main thing I noticed was the difference of our people on stage !!! By no means did I even mention Christina, look at my post !!! I was inspired by her show and she is a beautiful woman of power … Thank you @xtina for inspiring me !!!”

Spears went on to add that she would “never intentionally body shame anybody because I know what it feels like.”

I struggle with this because of how I feel about myself, not because I hate how anybody looks,” she continued. “I feel like my family knew I was insecure and people were trying to purposefully feed into this insecurity by not letting me have a choice in the people who were on stage with me.”

Spears closed her post by referencing the recent termination of the conservatorship she had been living under for 13 years. “I appreciate you all being understanding with me as I figure out this new life I’m living !!!

Earlier this week, Spears said she likely won’t perform live again as she aired her grievances with having to work during her conservatorship.

“I’m pretty traumatized for life and yes I’m pissed as f— and no I won’t probably perform again just because I’m stubborn and I will make my point.”
