Britney Spears posted a lengthy Instagram rant Friday morning, saying “it makes me sick to my stomach” that people close to her are reportedly telling reporters that “she’s gonna die” unless she gets an intervention due to her alleged mental health and substance abuse issues.
“I mean at some point enough is enough !!!” Spears wrote. “I’m probably going to have to stop posting on Instagram because even though I enjoy doing it, there’s obviously a lot of people who don’t wish me well!!!”
Spears’ husband, Sam Asghari, also addressed reports from TMZ and People that he, her manager, two doctors and other professionals planned an intervention that was supposed to take place Tuesday and then abruptly canceled.
“An intervention did not occur,” Asghari told Access, not being clear on whether an intervention was planned, and then canceled. He said, however, “My wife is in full control of her life and will continue to make all decisions involving her care regardless of circumstances. Speculation on her health is inappropriate and should end immediately.”
Multiple sources with direct knowledge of Spears’ situation told TMZ and People that her inner circle has become alarmed “by her erratic, volatile behavior” that’s been fueled by her abuse of caffeine, Adderall and other substances and her refusal to take medication that’s needed to stabilize her mood.
“She is often up all night, sleeps during (the) day and has a lot of anger,” one source told People, while another source said that the situation behind the scenes has been “very difficult” and “absolutely chaotic.”
An insider told TMZ that the planned intervention Tuesday was long overdue because the singer “is very much a danger to herself and those around her. It’s a ticking time bomb.”
“This is 2008 all over again,” another source told TMZ, referring to Spears’ dramatic mental health breakdown that year which led to the entertainer being placed in a 13-year conservatorship, overseen by her father Jamie Spears. The conservatorship was terminated in 2021 by a California judge.
“There is serious fear she is either going to die or kill someone,” the source said. “She is abusing caffeine, Adderall, and anything she can get her hands on. She is not taking her medication, which is essential to stabilize her mood and is unknowingly trying to self-medicate with other substances, which is exacerbating her mental illness.”
The intervention was planned for Tuesday but canceled at the last minute, TMZ and People reported, citing sources in her inner circle. Spears’ manager had rented a house in the Los Angeles area where the intervention would take place. Her manager, Asghari and others would try to convince her she needed help. Spears’ father, mother, sister and sons wouldn’t be involved.
While the intervention didn’t happen, Spears met with a doctor Wednesday night, People said. That meeting went well, but the next steps are unclear.
Since the end of Spears’ conservatorship over a year ago, she has become active on social media, airing her grievances about how she was “victimized,” People said. Spears has accused her father of forcing her to work, to spend time in a mental health facility and to use birth contro,l and she has blamed other family members for enabling her “trauma.” Spears’ family has denied her claims, and have said they only wanted to help.
Concerns for Spears’ welfare hasn’t been limited to her inner circle but has extended to some of her fans, which culminated last month in a welfare check from local police. A spokesperson for the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office told People in January that deputies received multiple calls from people concerned that Spears had deleted her Instagram account.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we responded to her home for a check on her well-being and determined she was safe and in no danger,” the spokesperson said.
Spears addressed the incident in a statement she posted to Twitter, where she asked her fans to take a step back after “some prank phone calls” prompted law enforcement to visit her home. She also said she felt she was being “gaslit” and “bullied” after the welfare check became news.

Spears almost immediately returned to Instagram and early Friday addressed the latest reports about her mental health, saying she’s “doing the best I can.”
“There’s obviously a lot of people who don’t wish me well !!! I’m honestly not surprised at all,” Spears said. “No folks, it’s not 2007 … it’s 2023 and I’m making my first homemade lasagna at home !!! I finally got my fireplace to work in my living room !!! As my hubby says it best: don’t believe everything you read !!! All that love right back at ya !!!”
