Passengers at Heathrow Airport were not happy this morning, claiming the situation was “chaos” after the airport is reportedly facing long queues and system failures.
Holidaymaker @kate83205012 tweeted: “@BBCNews Heathrow airport chaos. BA systems down.”
@TheRealCostaS seconded this claim: “@British_Airways @HeathrowAirport sort out your computer systems and staff. Been waiting for over an hour to get my passport checked only for it to say go back for another check.
“Waiting for another hour and the queue isn’t moving. This is beyond a joke.”
@Amygoesdancing added: “@British_Airways what is going on at Heathrow?? Are the systems down? Got two family members waiting in the departure lounge and another in a long queue trying to drop bags and meet the other two in time for their flight at 11.30am.”
Travel chaos may ensue following the announcement of strikes by air traffic controllers, which may be announced as early as Monday, July 10.
Eurocontrol’s workers are striking for better pay, working hours and staffing issues.
Simon Calder spoke to This Morning about how the strikes may affect travellers this summer.
Answering the question of whether this could lead to the cancellation of 12,600 flights per day, Simon said “theoretically”.
However, he is more worried about “overstretch”. He explained that rather than being told of one delay, we are being told about multiple delays in several countries such as France, Italy and Greece.
He added that there are “high overload times” particularly on Fridays.
For those yet to book their summer holiday, Simon provided some advice for those thinking of jetting off before the weekend.
He said he is “absolutely sure” that the busiest days since 2019 to fly will be Fridays in July and August, calling these “absolute peak times”.
He recommended travellers head off on a Tuesday morning, for example, instead.
A spokesperson from Heathrow Airport told Express.co.uk: “The airport is free flowing and there is no queues at security. Our colleagues are ready to welcome passengers for a busy day of summer getaways.
”Airlines are responsible for baggage but my colleagues in the control room tell me there are no issues in that area this morning either.”
Express.co.uk also contacted British Airways for comment.
