Brittney Griner has played well in her return to the WNBA after missing last season, but her team, the Phoenix Mercury, is scuffling.
That’s probably putting things mildly. The Mercury have the worst record in the league (2-10) and fired head coach Vanessa Nygaard on Sunday.
Following Phoenix’s 97-74 loss to the Seattle Storm on Saturday, Griner expressed her frustration with how things are going.
“What’s happening isn’t going to cut it,” she said. “It’s the first time since what, ’03, we’ve had a record like this? It’s the first time I’ve ever had a record like this. It’s really frustrating.
“I don’t know. I guess tear it down and rebuild it back up. I really don’t get it. It’s not going the way we want it to go. It’s not the Phoenix Mercury basketball we all know.”

Griner, who missed the entire 2022 WNBA season while imprisoned in Russia, is averaging 19.1 points and 6.4 rebounds per game so far this year.
She and Diana Taurasi, the Mercury’s two best players, have each missed three games due to injury, but Phoenix hasn’t been winning with them in the lineup either.
We’ll see if interim head coach Nikki Blue is able to figure something out, starting Tuesday night against the Dallas Wings.
