Hulu has just released the official trailer for Quasi. The newest comedy to come from the Broken Lizard comedy troupe, the film will be the first to be made collaboratively by the group since 2018’s Super Troopers 2. It was announced in 2021 that they would next spoof The Hunchback of Notre Dame with their period comedy Quasi, though there wasn’t a lot that was revealed at the time about the project. We now know that the Searchlight Pictures film is heading to Hulu for a streaming release on April 20, 2023, and you can get a sneak peek by watching the brand new trailer below.
In the movie, per Hulu, “A hapless hunchback yearns for love, but finds himself in the middle of a murderous feud between the Pope and the king of France when each orders the hunchback to kill the other.”
Broken Lizard’s Kevin Heffernan directs Quasi, which is written by the comedy troupe as a whole. The film also stars the group’s longtime members Heffernan, Jay Chandrasekhar, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske. The Orville‘s Adrienne Palicki also stars. Quasi is produced by Richard Perello and co-executive produced by Matthew Medlin and Peter E. Lengyel. The Broken Lizard team all served as executive producers.
The film comes ahead of Disney trying their hand at a live-action adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, though their version will more specifically reimagine their cartoon version of the story that was released in 1996. The film, titled Hunchback, was first announced in 2019 and is planned for a release in 2024.
Broken Lizard Is Back at It with Quasi
“I’m très, très excited to get the Broken Lizard gang back together, but I’m even more excited to finally put my PhD in French Medieval Studies to use. It’s been a long time coming,” director, star, and executive producer Kevin Heffernan said back when the project was first announced.
Searchlight Pictures’ DanTram Nguyen and Katie Goodson-Thomas added, “We love Broken Lizard and are always thrilled to collaborate. Kevin, Steve, Jay, Paul, and Erik are a boisterous, talented, and hysterical group. We look forward to seeing them bring their raunchy charm to this satirical take on The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”
The history of Broken Lizard goes back to the mid-1990s. The comedy troupe released their first film, Puddle Cruiser, in 1996, though they made a big splash when they debuted their comedy Super Troopers in 2001. Before following that up with Super Troopers 2 in 2018, the group had also released the comedies Club Dread in 2004, Beerfest in 2006, and The Slammin’ Salmon in 2009. Jay Chandrasekhar also directed the Dukes of Hazzard movie released in 2005 which featured cameos from the other group members. They would also produce the 2012 comedy Freeloaders while having small cameos in the film.
