We almost could have seen an Oscar nominee getting involved with the shenanigans of Jackass Forever. Recently, Jackass franchise star and co-creator Johnny Knoxville appeared on The Howard Stern Show to help promote the release of the new sequel. During the conversation, Knoxville revealed that Nebraska star Bruce Dern had reached out hoping to land a cameo in the movie. While the Jackass team would have obliged, they were almost wrapped with filming by that point, leaving no opportunity to work Dern in.
“Bruce Dern had contacted us — someone had contacted us [saying] ‘Bruce Dern wants to be in Jackass. I — we would love Bruce Dern to be in Jackass, but now we’re kind of done filming,” Knoxville explained.
This is unfortunate for Dern, who must clearly be a Jackass fan if he was looking to get involved in Jackass Forever. The good news is that not all hope is lost for appearing in a Jackass movie. Initially, Knoxville had been suggesting that Jackass Forever would be the last film in the series as he’s personally retiring from the highly-dangerous stunts. He’s more recently suggested that more films could be made with a new cast taking charge.
“I don’t know, we could do another Jackass,” Knoxville told Extra. “We have a young cast. We have a ton of ideas we didn’t even get to. But if there was another one, I would probably step back and sit next to Jeff, more times than not, behind the camera. But we could do another one, yeah.”
The new film does bring back the main cast including Knoxville, Steve-O, Chris Pontius, Dave England, Wee Man, Danger Ehren, and Preston Lacy. There are also some newcomers to the cast participating in the stunts, including Sean McInerney, Jasper, Zach Holmes, and Rachel Wolfson, and potentially they could help lead Jackass 5 if it ever gets made. Celebrities like Eric Andre, Shaquille O’Neal, Tony Hawk, and Machine Gun Kelly also make cameos.
Jackass Forever Is the End of an Era
Maybe a new cast could take over with the franchise, but it’s the end of an era with Johnny Knoxville stepping away. The stuntman was hospitalized while filming the movie with his injuries including a brain hemorrhage, and it has put filming dangerous stunts into perspective for Knoxville. At a certain point, the 50-year-old decided that it was no longer worth the risk.
“I got a broken wrist, broken rib, concussion and brain hemorrhage,” Knoxville said. “My cognitive skills took a couple of months to come back. I was walking and talking and carrying on a conversation, but I wasn’t 100% for three months. I couldn’t sit still. I couldn’t focus on anything, which is a problem usually, but it was really a problem. I was like a butterfly, flying around.”
He added, “My family doesn’t like me doing this type of thing… I’ve done enough. I don’t have anything to prove. I have kids to raise. That’s the most important thing.”
As for Bruce Dern, the actor stars in the new horror film Hellblazers that was just released on the free streaming service Tubi. Directed by Justin Lee, the film also stars Billy Zane and genre legends Tony Todd, Adrienne Barbeau, John Kassir, Meg Foster, and Courtney Gains. He is also set to appear in Lee’s upcoming thriller The Most Dangerous Game with Tom Berenger, Judd Nelson, and Casper Van Dien.
