BOSTON – Cheers from fans at Fenway Park echoed throughout the city as the Bruins scored a second goal, leading to their third NHL Winter Classic win. The Bruins breaking a record with the most NHL Winter Classic wins Monday night.
An excited fan leaving Fenway Park told WBZ, “The Bruins win the final and make NHL history.” Another fan saying, “They’re still undefeated at home!”
It was a sellout at Fenway Park with 39,243 people in attendance.
Bruins Head Coach Jim Montgomery told WBZ despite the mild weather, the conditions on the ice were perfect.
Montgomery greeted fans before the start of the game and says he feels overwhelmed with gratitude.
“You’re combining the Bruins and the Red Sox. What an incredible event and my family gets to be here and we get to share it. I guess I’m filled with love right now,” said Coach Montgomery.
The Bruins took the field before the puck drop in full Red Sox gear, honoring the history of the ballpark by wearing old-timey uniforms.
Commenting on the costumes, Coach Montgomery added, “Another moment we’ll remember for the rest of our lives.”
Fans in attendance have waited years for the Winter Classic to return to the Bay State.
“We tried the last time, and we couldn’t get tickets,” said Penny Freeman.
Another excited Bruins fan said, “I couldn’t come in 2010 so now it’s 2023 so we got to do it right.”
Penguins fans were also in attendance, traveling nine hours to Boston to cheer on their team.
“We feel like we have home court advantage because we see a lot of other Pittsburghers here,” said a Penguins supporter.
The weather also added to the great atmosphere with warm temperatures at the ballpark. “The weather is insane, no gloves, barely need to wear a hat,” a fan said.
From a celebrity puck drop, to a concert that Freeman says she enjoyed… “Went and saw the free concert, Sam Hunt, awesome!”
This game was one Boston fans like Mason Dorr, will remember forever.
“Fenway Park is a special place and we’re happy to be out here,” said Dorr.
This was the first Winter Classic at Fenway Park since 2010, when the Bruins beat Philadelphia in overtime.
The Bruins also played outdoors in 2016 when they lost to Montreal at Gillette Stadium, in 2019 at Notre Dame when they beat Chicago and in February 2021 when they beat the Flyers in Lake Tahoe.
