Bubba Wallace has been impressive in his Cup Series career, with two wins and 27 top-ten finishes. Wallace is one of the bright young stars in the sport, and he drives for the 23XI team co-owned by Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan.
Jordan held his teammates to a high standard when he played in the NBA. Wallace says it’s no different now that he’s an owner in NASCAR.
“He’s always just giving you jabs,” Wallace told the Chicago Sun-Times ahead of Sunday’s first-ever street race in Grant Park.
“Checking your confidence and making sure it’s in check. And that’s super important. But he’s always going to rag on you about something, so you’ve got to be ready for it.”
Wallace and his teammate Tyler Reddick have definitely been ready for it.
Reddick is also a multi-time winner in the Cup Series and has 48 top-ten finishes of his own.
Bubba’s Block Party Chicago was a huge success! Big thanks to Lupe Fiasco, all the partners, and @NASCAR for getting this done. This is just one of the ways we’re working to bring new faces to this sport???????? pic.twitter.com/wTHVoywuqF

Wallace says his status as one of Jordan’s drivers – and as the only Black full-time driver in the Cup Series – is not lost on him.
“I’ve learned there are a lot of people that are rooting for the 23 car out there across the globe, and that’s really, really cool,” Wallace said.
“So to be here in Chicago, where I know 23 has a massive significance, it’s just cool to be carrying the number and the colors and everything else about it.”
Wallace will hope to carry that No. 23 car into Victory Lane on Sunday in Chicago.
