Shaquil Barrett, linebacker for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is mourning the death of his 2-year-old daughter, Arrayah, who drowned in a swimming pool at their South Tampa home Sunday morning, the Tampa Bay Times reports.
According to Tampa Police, officers arrived at Barrett’s home just before 9:30 a.m. in response to a child who fell into a pool. The toddler was transported to an area hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later despite numerous lifesaving efforts.
The Tampa Police Department released a statement on Sunday saying the investigation into the death is ongoing and appeared to be simply a tragic incident. The Buccaneers also issued a statement reflecting on the sudden death of Barrett’s daughter.
“Today’s tragic news is heartbreaking for all members of the Buccaneers family,” the Bucs said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Shaq, Jordanna and the entire Barrett family during this unimaginably difficult time. While no words can provide true comfort at a time such as this, we offer our support and love as they begin to process this very profound loss of their beloved Arrayah.”
Arrayah was born two months after her father and the Buccaneers beat the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 55. Shaquil Barrett has three older children with his wife Jordanna: Shaquil Jr., Braylon and Aaliyah.
Barrett had also just signed a four-year, $72 million contract with $34 million guaranteed. His 2022 season ended early when he tore his Achilles in a Week 8 game against Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens.
