Under swapping format, every EV would require at least two batteries. One would be in a vehicle, while the other one kept fully charged at the swapping station. The government’s announcement for battery swapping policy and formulating interoperability standards will help automakers to consider swapping format as a viable commercial option.
The companies such Hero MotoCorp and Ashok Leyland may benefit in the initial phase; they have plans to launch EVs based on the battery swapping method. India’s largest two-wheeler company Hero Moto is investing in EV battery swapping technology with Taiwan based company Gogoro. The maker of Splendor bikes is partnering with Gogoro for EV vehicles and its battery swapping network.
The announcement on battery policy will provide a big boost to the deployment of electrical mobility in the country. This will also improve the deployment of battery-led energy storage systems for complementing the green energy generation and decentralization of energy distribution. Further, the new tech development in batteries will go a long way in decreasing the dependence on imported battery tech and helping domestic firms overcome the global supply-chain and geopolitical issues.
