It’s not too often parents go shopping for new school supplies in May but due to another mass school shooting, one item has been added to the list: Bulletproof backpacks.
Leatherback Gear’s founder and CEO, former Secret Service agent Mike De Geus, told TMZ that his company has seen an 800% increase in sales for their reinforced bags since last week’s shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, that killed 19 students and two teachers.
The backpacks offer the same amount of protection as the bulletproof armour he wore when protecting former presidents Donald Trump, Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
The backpacks were specifically designed with active shootings in mind, he said to TMZ, detailing that the bags — which retail for $250US — separate into two pieces to transform into a bulletproof vest, covering the wearer’s front and back.
