Keeping ‘brilliant’ Joe Root quiet is big job for Australia, says Justin Langer

Former Australia captain Allan Border has described Jos Buttler ‘s dismissal in the third Ashes Test as “a sackable offence”.

Buttler was out for three as England were bowled out for just 185 in their first innings, with the 31-year-old charging down the wicket against Nathan Lyon and smacking the ball straight to deep midwicket.

It was the final over of the session and Buttler’s dismissal left England in disarray at 128-6.

Speaking on Fox Cricket, Border delivered a scathing verdict of Buttler’s shot selection, saying: “A sackable offence as far as I’m concerned.

“He’s really one of the senior guys. Yes, we know he’s an aggressive player. I myself was even talking about him being a bit more aggressive but not two minutes before the tea break… that is not on.”

Former Australia opener Chris Rogers, meanwhile, branded it “kamikaze batting”, saying: “I’m speechless.

“He just had to get through that over. That is kamikaze batting really.”

Ex-England batting coach Mark Ramprakash stated that Buttler has never looked “comfortable” as a Test match batter, telling BT Sport: “Jos Buttler, to me, has never been clear [on his game plan].

“I’ve never seen him comfortable with his method in Test cricket. Bairstow is batting at six, in front of Buttler, so they must think he’s a better batsman than Buttler, so why hasn’t he got the [wicketkeeper] gloves too? That to me is muddled thinking.

“Bairstow has six Test hundreds, Buttler has two. There’s a muddled selection policy and a lack of strategy about England at the moment.”

“We’ve got to get a bit stronger and tougher with our dismissals,” admitted Jonny Bairstow. “We know that and we’ve spoken about that, that is just being honest with ourselves.

“I can tell you now everyone is trying. It’s one of those days that we will look back on, probably reassess next time and potentially take different options. We’re still searching for that big score.”
