BYD Atto 3 gets over-the-air update, adds maps and Spotify

BYD has rolled out the first free over-the-air (OTA) software update for its newly launched Atto 3 electric SUV.

The OTA update brings new features to its rotating 12.8-inch touchscreen such as maps, Spotify integration, and the ability to use voice commands to operate features such as the panoramic sunroof and climate control.

Coincidentally, we had an Atto 3 Extended Range in for review right when the OTA update for its DiLink system went online.

The update comes in two stages called V1.0.1 and V1.0.2, which we downloaded in the office car park and installed sequentially through the settings menu.

You don’t need to be in the car when it’s downloading and installing the updates, which take an hour or two depending on the network.

The second update was not accessible for a few hours after downloading and installing the first one, in our case. During these updates the vehicle could not be driven and the car told us its state of battery charge had to be above 20 per cent.

Some nifty additions include live satellite-navigation including electric car charger locations, which looks particularly good with the screen moved to portrait.

The Spotify integration lets you login to your own account using a QR code and displays your dashboard intuitively. Previously you could only stream your music from your phone via Bluetooth and USB.

The voice commands activated by saying “Hi BYD” let you control the sunroof, climate control and radio.

The next OTA update is expected in about a month and will add Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – we aren’t sure if it’ll be wired or wireless.

Given my early time at the wheel of the Atto 3 was frustrating because its great touchscreen lacked functions, this OTA update certainly made a big difference.

Keep an eye out for our written and video reviews of the BYD Atto 3 inside the next week.
