California theme park scales back chaperone policy in wake of teen fights

Knott’s Berry Farm has scaled back its weekend chaperone policy that went into effect over the summer to help restore order and confidence at the Buena Park theme park after multiple fights broke out involving teenagers.

Under the updated policy, all visitors 17 years old or younger must be accompanied by a chaperone on Saturdays to enter Knott’s Berry Farm, according to the park’s website.

The chaperone policy has evolved several times since July after a series of fights involving rowdy teens caused panic and chaos that forced the early closure of the park to ensure guest safety.

Knott’s initially required teen chaperones on Fridays and Saturdays before adding Sundays as well. The theme park extended the chaperone policy to every night of the popular Knott’s Scary Farm Halloween event in September and October.

The violence erupted on July 16 when Buena Park Police responded to reports of multiple fights and unfounded reports of gunshots at Knott’s. Video footage of the chaos and panic inside Knott’s showed punches being thrown during numerous fights throughout the park while visitors hid for their safety in shops and restaurants.

The chaperone must be at least 21 years old, have a valid ID with date of birth, provide a phone number and remain with the minors throughout the entire visit. A single chaperone can accompany up to five underage visitors per day. Visitors under 18 found in the park without a chaperone could face ejection.
