A ‘delighted’ Callum Hudson-Odoi highlighted Romelu Lukaku’s impact off the bench after Chelsea returned to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa.

The Blues had drawn their previous two Premier league matches and got off to a nightmare start as Reece James directed Matt Targett’s cross beyond Edouard Mendy just before the half-hour mark at Villa Park.

But Jorginho levelled from the penalty spot just six minutes later and Lukaku was introduced at the halfway stage as Tuchel looked to inject some life into his side, with Christian Pulisic cutting a frustrated figure up front in the opening 45 minutes.

The Belgian’s last goal in the top flight came in the reverse fixture at Stamford Bridge way back in mid-September 11, but he showed great movement to find space and head the visitors in front 11 minutes in the second half.

Ezri Konsa clumsily brought Lukaku down in the box as Jorginho scored a second spot-kick in the third minute of stoppage time and Chelsea held firm to go level on points with second-placed Liverpool in the table.

‘I’m delighted. The way we came out in the second half was obviously enjoyable to watch from a fans’ point of view as well but also for ourselves,’ Hudson-Odoi – who won Chelsea’s first penalty – told Stadium Astro shortly after the final whistle.

‘We knew what we needed to do. From the first half they were really overloading the sides which was very difficult for us at times to try and press them.

‘But we adapted very well in the second half, we got over and then obviously we started to become more ruthless in front of goal and tried to create more chances in and around the box, especially when Rom came on.

‘He was very good for us to hold the ball up, being around the box and to create chances so it was a very good performance from us.’

Hudson-Odoi felt Chelsea capitalised brilliantly as Villa’s defence were pushed back deeper and deeper in the second half.

‘I think the game opened up. Aston Villa sat a bit deeper for us which helped us a bit as well,’ the England winger added.

‘We were making runs in behind which was causing them a lot of problems to try and deal with us.

‘The movement from everybody around the front five and front six was amazing. We all combined well, create as much as each other and that’s when the freedom came.

‘The more movement and the more time we try to get on the ball the more opportunities you get on the ball to do what you can do to try and score or assist.’

Injuries to Thiago Silva and N’Golo Kante put a slight dampener on Chelsea’s victory and Tuchel was unable to confirm whether the duo would be able to face Brighton on Wednesday.

Asked whether Silva and Kante will likely miss the match, the German told reporters: ‘I guess so. It is only two days [away] so from today until Wednesday is a very short time.

‘N’Golo is very painful in exactly the same spot where he had his injury versus Juventus.

‘With Thiago it was his hamstring. Hopefully he got out before it became an injury and from there we try to continue and find a new squad and strong squad on Wednesday.’
