Where does Tyson Fury’s win leave the world heavyweight scene?

Joe Calzaghe has called for Tyson Fury to take other challenges in the heavyweight division with a mandatory defence against Dillian Whyte looming.

The ‘Gypsy King’ has just completed an explosive trilogy with bitter rival Wilder and is pondering his next move in the stacked division.

And British rival Whyte is waiting in the wings for his world title shot, with the WBC set to rule on his mandatory challenge in the coming days.

But former two-weight world champion Calzaghe has called for Fury to take on more challenges despite labelling him the best fighter in the division.

“The heavyweight division is the division that excites me at the minute,” Calzaghe told talkSPORT. “To think, we had two world champions from Britain is incredible – we never would’ve thought this 20 years ago.

“ Tyson Fury, he’s the top fighter for me. I love watching him fight, but he needs to fight somebody else.

“He fought the same guy three times in the last three years, so it would be nice to see him fight somebody else soon.”

Calzaghe had an incredible resume during his own career that included the likes of Chris Eubank, Roy Jones Jr and Mikkel Kessler.

And like Fury, he reigned undefeated throughout his 46-fight career, winning world titles in the super-middleweight and middleweight divisions.

But the ‘Gypsy King’ is yet to face some of the top talent from home soil including Anthony Joshua and WBC interim champion Whyte.

An undisputed tilt looked to be on the cards earlier in the year after signing a contract worth over £100million to take on Joshua in a clash for all-four belts.

Although to the despair of boxing fans it was scrapped after Fury was ruled to face Wilder in a third meeting by an arbitration court.

Fury has also hinted at hanging up his gloves having made significant accomplishments since his comeback in 2018.

And if he does return to the ring it is likely he will face Whyte in a bid to retain the illustrious green WBC title.

Fury’s father John has called for him to retire from the sport before that challenge, in confidence that no challenger remaining can beat his lineal champion son.

Fury Sr told BT Sport Boxing during an interview: “He’ll have a good hard-earned rest now and what he wants to do is up to him.

“I said retire, you’ve done enough, he’s won everything, he’s got no more to prove. He’s got millions in the bank, he’s secure for life.

“There’s more to life than getting your brains rattled to please the public. He’s his own man, he’ll do what he wants to do. But for me, I’d like to call it a draw now.

“Tyson is in a different league to these heavyweights, but if you want to get a payday, be nice to him, he could beat Dillian Whyte and Usyk on the same night with a proper camp. I’ll put money on it.”
