Cameron Diaz feels ‘guilt’ over quarrels with Jamie Foxx before mystery hospitalization, friends says in report

Jamie Foxx promised his friend Cameron Diaz a triumphant return to movies by convincing her to co-star with him in his Netflix action-comedy “Back in Action.” Instead the project was plagued with production problems and ultimately plunged into uncertainty when filming was halted in April after Foxx was hospitalized for a mysterious “medical complication,” from which he’s reportedly still recovering.

Diaz is dealing with that uncertainty herself, as well as “guilt” over how these reported production problems led to her to quarrel with Foxx on the set, a close friend of the 50-year-old actor told the Daily Mail. Diaz also hasn’t spoken to Foxx since he was hospitalized and doesn’t know what’s going on with him, “other than what she hears,” the friend said.

Diaz was ready to quit acting for a second time when problems started occurring on the London set of “Back in Action” earlier this year, which included a delay in production and reports that Foxx had a “meltdown” and fired a bunch of people involved in the project, the Daily Mail reported. These issues caused Diaz and Foxx to get into “heated arguments” and were not resolved prior to Foxx’s medical emergency after the production moved to Atlanta.

“Cameron feels a tremendous sense of guilt now about their quarrels since she has not been able to make amends,” the anonymous friend told the Daily Mail. She also has not signed on for another film and isn’t looking at any new scripts, the anonymous friend said.

“Honestly, she is not sure what is going on with ‘Back In Action’ and isn’t very proud of it, considering there was so much drama even before Jamie was hospitalized,” the friend told the Daily Mail.

Representatives for Diaz and Foxx did not respond to requests from the Daily Mail for comment.

Foxx’s medical crisis became known via a cryptic April 12 Instagram post from his daughter, Corinne Foxx. She said he “had experienced a medical complication” while he was in Atlanta. He had been photographed the day before his reported hospitalization filming a scene at a soccer game with Diaz and co-star Glenn Close.

TMZ revealed last month that Foxx had been moved to a Chicago rehab center known for stroke, traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury care. The Daily Mail suggested that Foxx is still receiving care at the center, reporting that his family has been seen numerous times visiting him there.

Corinne Foxx and others in Foxx’s close circle have adamantly refused to discuss the nature of his condition. CNN reported in May that it had reached out to reps for Foxx multiple times for information on the actor’s condition and the status of his recovery, but said it has been unable to get additional details from them. CNN said the desire for privacy is in keeping with how the actor and comedian has always lived, despite a career that puts him in the spotlight.

Diaz’s work with Foxx on “Back in Action” was seen as her comeback to acting after she announced her retirement in 2018. It was going to be her first movie in nearly a decade since “Annie” in 2014. This adaptation of the Broadway musical incidentally co-starred Foxx.

Last summer, Foxx boasted that he was the one who coaxed Diaz out of retirement, telling “Entertainment Tonight” that she is “such an incredible force.” He said he asked her, “’Do you wanna have some fun? Just have some fun!’ And I think that’s what brought her to it. … We’re so happy that it’s happening and looking forward to it.”

But that promise of “fun” devolved into “chaos” on the London set of “Back in Action,” according to reports. In March, Foxx allegedly “had an absolute meltdown,” which led to the firing of multiple people, including an executive producer, two directors and his own driver, the Daily Mail reported. There was even more drama when it was revealed that production was paused after an unexploded World War II-era bomb was discovered, just before two major action scenes were set to be filmed.

In addition to “hating the drama and confrontation” on the set, Diaz also wasn’t happy about the 12-hour workdays that kept her from her husband Benji Madden, 44, and their young son Raddix. One of the reasons Diaz reportedly retired from acting is that she didn’t want to spend time away from her family.

If Diaz has been left in the dark about Foxx’s medical condition, she’s not alone. So have other friends and colleagues outside his immediate inner circle. John Boyega, who starred alongside Foxx in the Netflix film “They Cloned Tyrone,” expressed concern for his recovery.

“No one has heard from Jamie,” Boyega told Entertainment Tonight last week. “I wanted him to show up here, but you know, I know he’s dealing with what he’s dealing with. I just wish him all the best.”
