Campaigners demand Boris Johnson cuts ‘scandalous’ fuel price & ends ‘anti-motorist plans’

According to RAC Fuel Watch, a litre of petrol will currently set drivers back 145.99p, with diesel costing 149.20p per litre. While both fuels are expected to continually fall in price, costs are much higher than they were at the end of 2020.

Filling up the average 55-litre family car now costs over £16 more than 2020’s festive season.

The FairFuelUK Campaign claims that 18 million drivers on the road this Christmas will be “fleeced” by almost £2billion.

They say this is attributed to wholesale falls in petrol and diesel where the savings have “failed to pass onto” the UK’s 37 million drivers.

Because of this, FairFuelUK and a number of MPs and other campaigners are calling on the Government to set up an independent pump price monitoring body to protect consumers.

“That’s why we need to introduce an independent pump pricing watchdog.”

Ninety percent of FairFuelUK’s 1.7 million supporters have called for a “PumpWatch” to be created, similar to how Ofgem, Ofcom and Ofwat operate.

Howard Cox, founder of the FairFuelUK Campaign, also spoke of the need for greater protections, especially with other household bills going up in price.

He said: “The AA and the RAC have at last, woken up to the scandalous high pump prices generated unnecessarily by greedy wholesalers and fuel brokers.

“The perennial scandal that FairFuelUK has been campaigning against for the last decade.

“PumpWatch is now even more crucial to the Nation’s positive economic growth, jobs, business investment, logistics, consumer spending and social mobility.

“This beleaguered Conservative Government needs it in place now, to help regain trust again and to avoid long-term voter repercussions.

“Boris you know this makes economic and political sense, it’s time for you to throw away your anti-motorist plans and recognise the common sense in giving drivers a well-deserved break.”

This comes as petrol was named as one of the main drivers of inflation after the price rose to its highest ever prices.

Robert Halfon MP, Vice Chair of the APPG for Fair Fuel for Motorists and Hauliers, demanded action to protect drivers, saying: “Struggling families need a PumpWatch regulator asap.

“The rip off oil companies are feeding the cost of living crisis as they refuse to cut prices at the pumps even when the international oil price has fallen.

“If we can have an energy price cap, at least have a fair price at the pumps.”
