Q: Is it going to take another 9/11 to make us polite drivers instead of me-firsters? Two things are really bothering me right now (besides the insane speeding!)
Roberta Howe, San Jose
A: After 9/11, drivers slowed down…for a few days, and then it was back to old driving ways. Please continue, Roberta…
Q: Merging: When entering the freeway, you are supposed to match speed with existing traffic. When I’m driving in the right lane and someone comes up the ramp to merge ahead me, I back off a bit to give them a chance to merge safely. I suspect many people speed up and don’t allow this. This creates fearful drivers who hang back before merging, and that is really dangerous. A friend recently posted that someone STOPPED coming up an on-ramp!

A: And…
Q: Stop signs: You hear “treat it as a four-way stop.” What does that mean? My understanding is that it is a clockwise progression around the intersection (following the yield-to-the car-on-your-right rule). But people do criss-crossing, roll on through and every other kind of “me first” behavior.

A: Vehicles that get to the intersection first have the right-of-way. If a vehicle gets to the intersection at the same time that you do, the vehicle on your right has the right-of-way. And finally…
Q: I blame a lot of this on the lack of driver’s ed in high school. Can we bring that back? My 20-year-old nephew is very nervous about learning to drive and I hate to see him have to pay for a lot of lessons.
Roberta Howe, San Jose
A: Driver’s ed in high school was very useful.
Q: As I’m driving around the Bay Area, I sometimes come across highways that have almost no lane markers. Sometimes they have only occasional /sparse reflectors and no lines at all. Sometimes they have lines but no reflectors, and I cannot see the lane markers at night or in the rain. I think there is one section of highway in San Francisco that may have had no markers of any kind – lines or reflectors (it was night, so I’m not 100% sure).
I am in my early 30’s and have a hard time seeing, so I imagine many people with worse eyes cannot see anything at all! I lived in the south for many years and their roads were so much better. Can you give any insights on the lack of proper lane markers here?
Cate Levey
A: New lane markers are gradually being installed on Bay Area roads. They are taller and will reflect better at night.
