The Commonwealth Games 2022 champion from India defeated the fifth-seeded Chinese shuttler 21-18, 22-20 in the summit clash that lasted for 50 minutes on Court 1 in the early hours of Monday (July 10). This is Lakshya’s second BWF World Tour 500 title after India Open win in January 2022.
Lakshya, who had a best finish of third this year, was quick off the blocks to take a lead in the opening game, but was made to fight by Shi Feng to win the game 21-18. The second game went down to the wire with Sen holding the nerve to avoid taking the match to the decider and clinched the tie 22-20.
“Coming into the Olympic qualification year, it was tough as things didn’t go my way. So, this win will be a big boost to my confidence,” Sen told PTI after the win. “I had to dig deep in some matches, the conditions were different and getting used to it was important.”
Earlier in the tournament, Lakshya, currently ranked 19 in the world, defeated the second seed Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn in Round of 32, Brazil’s Ygor Coelho in Round of 16 and Belgium’s Julien Carraggi in the quarterfinal.
In the semifinal, Sen got the better of fourth-seeded Kento Nishimoto of Japan, before he overcame World number 10 Shi Feng of China in the summit clash to clinch the title.
