Candace Cameron Bure Denies Claim of ‘Homophobia’ on Fuller House

A claim that Candace Cameron Bure had a queer character written out of Fuller House has prompted a response from the actress herself. After appearing in the original Full House show as a former child star, Bure returned as one of the leads in Netflix’s sequel series Fuller House. Debuting in 2016, the show was a success, spanning five seasons before wrapping up in 2020.

In the show’s fourth season, Miss Benny (Glamorous) played the role of Casey. This was the first openly queer character that’s appeared in either Full House or Fuller House, though the role was limited to two episodes. Per People, Miss Benny insinuates in a new TikTok video that Bure had been “homophobic” on the set of Fuller House, allegedly going so far as to have the writers remove Casey from the series. Miss Benny, who has since come out as transgender, didn’t mention Bure by name, though she included the hashtag #candacebure in the video description. In the video, she noted that “one of the Tanner sisters” was “very publicly not for the girls.”

“I remember I got sat down by the writers and the studio to basically warn me how this person allegedly was trying to get the character removed and not have a queer character on the show,” Miss Benny said, adding how she was “warned and prepared” how the person’s fans could end up targeting her with online harassment.

Bure has since provided a statement in response to the assertion that she was homophobic with Miss Benny. Bure completely denies that she asked for the Casey character to be removed while crediting the “wide range of characters” there had been on Fuller House. The 47-year-old goes on to note how she didn’t get a chance to know Miss Benny very well personally but wishes her well nonetheless.

“I never asked Miss Benny’s character to be removed from Fuller House and did not ask the writers, producers or studio executives to not have queer characters on the show,” Bure says in her statement. “Fuller House has always welcomed a wide range of characters. I thought Miss Benny did a great job as ‘Casey’ on the show. We didn’t share any scenes together, so we didn’t get a chance to talk much while filming on set. I wish Miss Benny only the best.”

Bure has previously been criticized by a celebrity for alleged rudeness. Singer and former child star JoJo Siwa said last year that Bure was the “rudest celebrity” she’d ever met after turning down a photo request at the Fuller House premiere. Bure would later draw further criticism when she confirmed that the TV movies she was developing for the Great American Family channel would focus on “traditional marriage,” meaning there were no plans to develop films with queer characters as the leads.

“Honestly, I can’t believe after everything that went down just a few months ago, that she would not only create a movie with intention of excluding LGBTQIA+, but then also talk about it in the press. This is rude and hurtful to a whole community of people,” Siwa would later say in response to Bure’s “traditional marriage” comments in an Instagram post.

“All of you know me, know beyond question that I have great love and affection for all people,” Bure would say in a statement at the time of that controversy. “It absolutely breaks my heart that anyone would ever think I intentionally would want to offend and hurt anyone. It saddens me that the media is often seeking to divide us, even around a subject as comforting and merry as Christmas movies.”

She’d add, “People of all ethnicities and identities have and will continue to contribute to the network in great ways both in front of and behind the camera, which I encourage and fully support.”
