Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez insists he paid no attention to the controversial judges’ scorecards following his comprehensive victory over Gennady Golovkin.
The Mexican superstar defended his WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF super-middleweight titles against his old rival in Las Vegas on Saturday night, ending their feud with a dominant victory in their trilogy bout.
After 12 rounds, Canelo was announced as the winner by unanimous decision with all three judges awarding him the fight.
However, two of the judges had the 32-year-old winning by a slim margin of 115-113 with the other going for 116-112.
Going off the 115-113 scorecards, had Golovkin won the last round of the contest, their fight would have been deemed a draw.
In reality, Canelo dominated the fight, comfortably winning the first eight rounds before Golovkin offered sterner resistance in the closing stages.
The scorecards were widely condemned on social media but reflecting on the judges’ calls, the undisputed super-middleweight champion was unfazed.
‘To be honest, I don’t hear the score, I just hear that I am still champion,’ Canelo told a press conference after his win.
‘Look, I respect the judges and they see that, its fine. I am ok, a win is a win.’
After sharing 36 rounds with Golovkin, the two shared a warm embrace after the final bell with Canelo paying tribute to the legendary Kazakh.
Thank you so much my friend, thank you Golovkin,’ he said. ‘I have gone through some very difficult things in my life, and the only thing you can do is try to continue and move forward.
‘I have been through difficult times recently with my defeat but I have shown that defeats can be great, to enable you to come back and show humility.
‘He [Golovkin] is a really good fighter. I am glad to share the ring with him. I will keep going forward to keep my legacy going.’
