Canelo Alvarez has ripped into retired Argentine footballer Sergio Aguero for defending Lionel Messi after the former pound-for-pound king claimed the PSG frontman cleaned the floor with the Mexican flag and kit.
Canelo warned Messi to hope he “doesn’t find him” as a video emerged of the football icon appearing to brush a Mexico shirt with his boot following Argentina’s 2-0 World Cup group stages win over them.
The proud Mexican took to Twitter to vent his anger, writing: “Did you guys see Messi cleaning the floor with our jersey and flag.
“He better pray to God that I don’t find him. Just like I respect Argentina, he has to respect Mexico! I’m not talking about the country as a whole, just about the bulls**t that Messi did.”
Aguero replied again to the boxing champion, adding: “I admired you Mr. Canelo. But what he did today with Messi was a low blow. And you know better than anyone that this is unfair. Disqualified.”
Aguero wasn’t alone in defending Messi, ex-Barca colleague Cesc Fabregas also chimed in with a similar tweet: “You neither know the person, nor do you understand how a dressing room works or what happens after a game.
“ALL t-shirts, even the ones we wear ourselves, go on the floor and are washed afterwards. And more when you celebrate an important victory.”
The undisputed super middleweight champion last fought two months ago, beating Gennady Golovkin in their trilogy bout. He is now expected to face Dmitry Bivol for a second time after losing to the Russian in May.
It is understood that Canelo’s preference is to make the fight at 168lb for all four of his major sanctioning body belts after struggling at 175lb last time out.
