Car fit for a Queen – Royal Jaguar to be auctioned as proceeds go to charity

A car once owned by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is to be sold at auction, with some proceeds going to charity.

The 2009 Jaguar X-Type Estate, finished in dark green, was owned by the Queen from when it was new until she passed away in September 2022.

The Royal car will be sold by Historics Auctions on July 22, 2023, with no reserve featured.

Whilst the Queen is perhaps most known for being chauffeured in a variety of Rolls Royces and Bentleys, she was regularly spotted behind the wheel of various cars.

In recent years, the Queen’s main vehicle was a Land Rover Defender, however she would use the Jaguar Estate as a backup vehicle, sometimes carrying her famous corgis in it.

During her time owning the car, the Queen was often seen driving the Jaguar around the Windsor Great Park, typically wearing sunglasses whilst behind the wheel.

After her death, the Jaguar was initially sold at auction in November 2022, and was purchased by the radio host Chris Evans in order to be given away in a fundraiser for Comic Relief.

The competition raised £300,000 for charity, with the current owner stating that a percentage of the money raised from the upcoming auction going to Great Ormand Street Hospital.

The 2009 Jaguar X-Type is a top of the range Soveriegn example that features a 3.0 V6 engine, which can go from 0-60 in 7.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 141mph.

The car is also very well equipped, with cream leather seats, a walnut dashboard, climate control, a sunroof, and built in satellite navigation.

It has covered 72,975 miles from new and has both a full service history and a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, confirming the authenticity of the vehicle.

However, this is not the first time the public have had a chance to buy a Royal car, with Princess Diana’s 1985 Ford Escort RS Turbo selling for £722,500 in August 2022.

Other cars owned by the Royal family that have been auctioned include a 1953 Land Rover which the Queen drove in Balmoral, Scotland, a 1980 Rolls Royce Silver Wraith II used by Princess Margaret, and a 1952 Humber Super-Snipe owned by the Queen Mother.

Whilst many of these cars have fetched huge sums of money, some were more affordable, with King Charles’ 2007 Land Rover Discover 3 being sold for £12,000 in March 2023.
