In what can only be described as a miracle, a driver is heading home with minor injuries after surviving a collision with a semi-truck near Mount Vernon, Washington.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Rocky Oliphant said the car – apparently this was once a Nissan Altima – was struck from behind by the truck, folded it in half, and then rolled on top of the car, crushing the vehicle, on the I-5., in Skagit County.

To the surprise of Oliphant, a 14-year veteran of the Washington SPT, the car and truck driver received treatment for minor injuries.

All lanes of Interstate 5 near Mount Vernon were closed for several hours as crews worked to clear the roadway of debris.

The crash forced the entire roadway to close at first; however, the Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) reopened southbound lanes shortly after 11:30 a.m. on November 16. The northbound lanes of Interstate 5 reopened shortly after 12:30 p.m., according to the Department.

The news comes at a time when efforts are underway to deal with heavy rain and strong winds that have hit western Washington over the last couple of days. Continued flooding and rain has caused damage to roadways and levees.
