Car tax rates could ‘increase’ for some drivers within years as exemptions set to run out

The AA says petrol is now at an average of 147.94p a litre, meaning it would cost drivers around £81 to fill a 55-litre tank.

Diesel prices are up around £6 over the past two months with prices now at 147.94 pence a litre.

The Treasury is expected to lose £40billion through the transition to electric vehicles through the loss of traditional Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) rates and fuel duty.

It is understood Chancellor Rishi Sunak was considering introducing a road pricing pay per mile scheme but this has since been scrapped.
