It wouldn’t be an awards show without something going wrong, right?
Luckily for Carey Mulligan, who was incorrectly named the Best Supporting Actress winner at the EE BAFTA Film Awards 2023 on Sunday, she managed to laugh off the blunder before it was edited out of the live show.
Last year’s recipient, CODA star Troy Kotsur, presented the Best Supporting Actress award using sign language. Troy did sign that Banshees of Inisherin actor Kerry Condon had won the award, but the sign language interpreter mistakenly said the name Carey Mulligan (who had been nominated for MeToo movie, She Said.)
“This is a bad moment,” Troy Kotsur told the BAFTA audience, as gasps sounded around the auditorium in London’s Royal Festival Hall.
According to MailOnline, Carey, who is currently pregnant, looked ‘visibly shocked’ when the gaffe was made by a sign language interpreter. A source in the audience told the website: “Carey was a really good sport and laughing about the mix up. She looked visibly shocked when her name was announced.”
Luckily the actress laughed it off and preceded to enjoy the rest of the evening at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday.
It was indeed a memorable evening full of glitz, glamour and, of course, awarding the very best in the business.
With the German First World War drama All Quiet on the Western Front scooping up 14 nominations, the most of the evening, and the Irish movie The Banshees of Inisherin, not far behind with ten nominations, the world of cinema has been truly impressive this year. Also, with everything happening in the real world, we’re thankful to the likes of Michelle Yeoh, Viola Davis, Cate Blanchett and Paul Mescal for helping us escape with some of the best movies this year.
