The former Countdown star, 61, shared a host of photos of herself in a flight suit and aviator sunglasses as she prepared for Thursday’s premiere.
The maths whizz is also a keen pilot herself, as she told her followers: ‘Trying my flying suit on a few days ago in London….I need a hair cut!!!
‘Strictly speaking it should be a gown on the red carpet tonight but this is my little homage to the original Top Gun and to my passion for aviation. #pilot’
She added: ‘Been going through some pics flying my lovely plane Mildred… she’s a twin engine Diamond DA42-VI and a beauty and have flown her all over Europe and up to Iceland in my survival kit… that was interesting and exciting.
‘Some other pics with genius fighter pilots… supersonic in a Typhoon, thrown around in Hawk in the Red Arrows, with Ben Murphy in his Red Bull racer….. on the ramp of a Chinook over London. What a lucky woman I’ve been in that way.’
Carol added that if she had been able, she would have been a fighter pilot herself just like Tom Cruise’s character of Maverick in the film.
She revealed: ‘You know the ONLY thing I ever wanted to be growing up and probably since…. is a fighter pilot. I was born 20 years too early, they didn’t take women pilots in the military in my day but I got my licences in my 50s which closed a happy circle.
‘So tonight isn’t just a red carpet or a movie for me. It’s much more meaningful I guess. I feel the need….the need….to say thank you.’
Carol also shared a throwback photo of her with Tom, ahead of the premiere in London’s Leicester Square, as she told her followers: ‘MAVERICK and MATH-ERICK.
‘Pic from a fair few years ago. We were racing cars at @goodwoodrrc having the best best time. I’m back to racing soon I hope. Have added rally driving to my list of MUST DOs as well. Life’s too short not to.’
Top Gun: Maverick sees Tom return in his iconic role as Pete Mitchell after over 30 years, one of the Navy’s top aviators, who is pushing the boundaries as a brave test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him.
