Carpet and rug cleaning hacks: Two ingredients to ‘cut through stains’ for under £1

Cleaning stubborn stains from carpets and rugs can turn into a costly exercise, especially if branded products or professional help is needed. However, according to an expert, if you catch the problem early enough, two simple kitchen cupboard ingredients could be the solution.

Daniel Prendergast from www.therugseller.co.uk explained: “Stains should always be tackled as soon as they happen – time really is of the essence when it comes to removing spillages so mop us as much as the stain as possible and never allow it to dry into the rug or carpet.”

Whether you’ve unexpectedly sent a drink flying, or your four-legged friend has had an accident, baking soda could be the solution.

Mr Prendergast said: “Believe it or not, the answer to stubborn stains could be hidden in your kitchen cupboards.

“White vinegar is one of the most useful household cleaning agents as it is great at lifting stains and acts as a disinfectant.

“Soak the area with the solution – this will help to cut through the stain and ensure that all of the urine is lifted from the carpet.

“Gently rub the area – take care here not to rub too vigorously and damage the carpet fibres. Whilst the area is still wet, cover with baking soda and gently rub it in.

“Leave it to dry – this could take a day or so depending on how much vinegar and water solution that you used – and then vacuum your rug thoroughly.

“The stain should have been lifted and any remaining odours removed.”

When it comes to spilt drinks, a little bit of elbow grease might be necessary.

The expert said: “For really stubborn stains you may need to repeat the process but perseverance should work in the end.”

How do these household ingredients work to remove stains?

Distilled white vinegar is one of the “best natural stain removers”, according to LaundryHeap.

Mild levels of acetic acid found in the vinegar work just enough to remove stains without ruining materials.

Baking soda, meanwhile, is an alkali that works against acidic ingredients to lift them.

In fact, bicarbonate of soda is often used in many washing powders.

Furthermore, baking soda is able to absorb odours rather than simply mask them, making it a great choice for banishing particularly potent spills.
