Cars could be ‘pushed away’ from city centres in the future with Highway Code changes

Councillor Doug Pullen of Lichfield District Council said he was keen to see cars kept away from Lichfield city centre in the future. The local authority has offered parking at some sites on the fringes of the shopping area over the festive period.

Drivers will be advised to leave a certain amount of space when motorcyclists, cyclists and horse riders overtake a car.

A number of cities in the UK have announced parking measures this month in an attempt to get the public to shop locally and reinvigorate town centres.

Social distancing measures introduced during the coronavirus crisis mean that businesses are utilising additional space outside premises in order to keep serving customers.

Michael Fabricant, Conservative MP for Lichfield has also suggested a move towards a more permanent car-free proposal.

He said: “I believe that in Lichfield, the inner heart of the city – Bore Street, Bird Street, Market Street and Dam Street – should be permanently pedestrianised with access only for deliveries at specified times.

“Other cities have done this years ago to great success.

“Disabled parking can be made available adjacent to the pedestrianised zone and adequate parking – able and disabled – would have to be provided.

“It would transform the very essence of our city for the better.

“Pedestrianisation will encourage tourism and boost our local economy.

“The evidence from elsewhere in the country is that it becomes a magnet for visitors and results in a more imaginative and diverse retail and dining offer.”

Mr Fabricant also conceded that “pedestrianisation is always controversial” but hopes that it will bring benefits to his city.

Car-free experiments have been trialled across the world with a recent example being seen in Brussels, and further schemes discussed for the Peak District and in “smart cities” in Saudi Arabia and South Korea.
