The remote car starter is undeniably a great invention, especially for those who live in colder climates. But the popular device does come with a small downside in the security department: using it could get your car stolen.

Police in Division 3 in Toronto’s northwest end are encouraging drivers to brave the cold weather rather than leave their vehicles unattended and running while the engine warms up after seeing what they call an “alarming” rise in the number of “warm up thefts” in the area.
With the keys in the ignition and the seat heater on, these running vehicles are a serious temptation for thieves and often too good to pass up, it seems.
Over the last three months, a total of 25 such vehicle thefts were reported in the area, up a good deal from years previous. In the GTA as a whole, nearly twice as many car thefts have occurred since the start of this year than over the same period last year, many of which have been pinched while warming up.

“These happen very quick. You know you can turn your back and this can happen,” Const. Mark Zettler said in an interview with CP24 last week.
“The perpetrators work either in groups or alone and it seems like they do know that if you walk up and down the street there will be an unoccupied running vehicle… It is a crime of opportunity.”
So beware. Sometimes opportunity knocks. And sometimes it idles.
