Edinson Cavani was reportedly ‘put out’ when asked to surrender his number seven shirt for new Manchester United signing Jadon Sancho.

Man United allegedly promised Sancho the number seven shirt during negotiations with the then Borussia Dortmund forward in 2020.

But BVB refused to sell Sancho for less than their £100million asking price and the Red Devils missed out on the England international.

Man United rekindled their interest in Sancho in the summer and agreed to sign the former Manchester City graduate for £73million.

The number seven shirt was again discussed, as Sancho was wearing it at Dortmund at the time, and the forward was set to inherit it at Old Trafford.

But by this time United had already tied down Cavani to another year after first signing him as a temporary alternative to Sancho.

And Cavani was the owner of the number seven shirt, prompting an awkward conversation between him and United chiefs.

According to The Athletic, Cavani was said to have been ‘put out’ at being asked to give up the number seven shirt for the new recruit.

As a result, Sancho was handed the number 25 shirt at Old Trafford and Cavani retained the number seven… until Cristiano Ronaldo turned up, of course.

Upon the Red Devils re-signing the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, Man United once again spoke to Cavani about the shirt number situation.

On this particular occasion, Cavani agreed to surrender the number and now wears 21.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said at the time: “Edinson has been remarkable.

“Cristiano spoke with Edinson and they spoke to each other. And to pass on his shirt just shows the respect he’s got for Cristiano, but also Cristiano speaking to Edinson shows the respect the other way. Two top, top professionals and players.”
