Celtic fans clap Modric as he gets standing ovation for fourth time this season

For the fourth time this season Luka Modric was given a standing ovation from the opposition.

The veteran Real Madrid midfielder proved yet again why he is one of the greatest midfielders of the modern era on Tuesday night with a stunning display at Parkhead.

The 36-year-old was just sublime for Madrid at Parkhead

Modric played 80 minutes of the match in Glasgow where he also scored – again with the outside of his boot – and, after putting on a serious show, he received a wonderful ovation from the home fans.

The cameras panned to the Celtic supporters, who were up on their feet and applauding to show their appreciation for one of the very best players in the world.

Celtic, though, are not even the first club this season to salute the Croatian magician.

Celta Vigo, Real Betis, Deportivo Alaves, Almeria and Real Sociedad have all risen to applaud him so far this term.

It was Modric’s 100th Champions League appearance for Los Blancos, becoming just the eighth player to reach this milestone for the club, joining Iker Casillas, Raul, Sergio Ramos, Karim Benzema, Roberto Carlos, Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo.

As he approaches 36, he is showing no signs of slowing down, and will continue to play a key role in the midfield, should Real get their hands on a 15th Champions League crown this season.

Modric would still walk into almost any side in world football

On the night, Vinicius Junior gave the away side lift off on 56 minutes, scoring past Joe Hart from a fine cross from Federico Valverde.

Eden Hazard then picked out Modric for Real Madrid’s second.

In scoring, at 36 years and 362 days, Modric became the oldest player to score for Real in the Champions League since Ferenc Puskas in the European Cup in September 1965 (38y 173d against Feyenoord).

Hazard then added a third.

Victory meant Carlo Ancelotti’s side opened their account with three points, and go joint-top of group F with Shakhtar Donetsk who beat RB Leipzig 4-1.
