Rangers’ Champions League hopes are on a knife-edge after a 2-2 draw with PSV at Ibrox last night.

But Gers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst insists his side can get the better of his close friend and former Dutch international team-mate Ruud van Nistelrooy’s men when they clash again in Eindhoven next Wednesday.

The visitors took the lead in 37 minutes when Ibrahim Sangare fired home after the Gers defence failed to clear a corner but Antonio Colak levelled before PSV goalkeeper Walter Benitez spilled a long-range free-kick from Tom Lawrence to gift Rangers the lead.

However, Armando Obispo headed home from another corner 12 minutes from time to give the Dutch side the edge.

Van Bronckhorst said: ‘It was very close, the differences aren’t that big. The tie is open. We go next week and still have the chance to go through. PSV are an excellent team, they showed that today. But they will be at home and maybe we will get more space. We need to give it everything and we will, because we need to win to go through.’

He added: ‘To lose two goals from set pieces was disappointing. The first one was maybe unlucky but at the second one we have to be stronger.’

Luuk De Jong volleyed an early chance over for the visitors and Rangers had a penalty claim turned down when Connor Goldson’s header hit Jordan Teze’s arm before PSV went in front when a corner was not cleared and Sangare fired home from close range.

Colak soon swept home the equaliser after a slick passing move and Benitez’s howler put the Gers in front but Obispo gave PSV the draw they deserved. Van Nistelrooy said: ‘Rangers were the better team in the first half. In the second half we started to press and play. The goalkeeper’s mistake was disappointing but 2-2 was a fair result.’
