NBA analyst Charles Barkley appeared on the Pat McAfee Show today to discuss the recent comments LeBron James made about potentially retiring. He wasn’t a fan to say the least.
When asked to give his thoughts on LeBron potentially retiring, Barkley admonished LeBron for hinting at retirement because he feels LeBron knew that doing so would change the narrative. He lamented that the media immediately seized on talking about LeBron rather than the Denver Nuggets and Nikola Jokic.
Barkley concluded at the end that LeBron isn’t going to retire, though a little more forcefully:
“I was disappointed in LeBron. He had to know that these fools on TV were gonna talk about it all the time. I got so frustrated the other day watching television. The first two stories were LeBron retiring, not about how great the Denver Nuggets played (in the Conference Finals). How great the Joker is. And HELL NO LeBron isn’t gonna retire!” Barkley said.

There definitely is a case to be made that LeBron hinting that he was contemplating retirement would have changed the narrative from how how terrible his team was during the Western Conference Finals, getting swept by the Nuggets in a series that wasn’t even particularly competitive.
LeBron James has made it pretty clear through the years that he wants to keep playing until he can play with his son Bronny in the NBA. With Bronny now a year or two from reaching the NBA, there’s no reason for him to give up now while his body is still in superb shape.
