The NBA has existed for over 75 years, and during that time there have been many great players to make their way to the league. Some players defined eras on their own, while others were part of great teams that made their mark on the league through consistent success.
With so many legendary players over the years, coming up with an all-time starting five is no easy feat.
Which era do you favor? Do you consider how the players will work together or are you only concerned with their individual talent?
One of those great players, Charles Barkley, attempted to answer all of those questions when he recently named his own all-time starting lineup.
“Michael (Jordan), Oscar Robertson, Bill Russell, Kareem (Abdul-Jabbar), and Wilt (Chamberlain),” Barkley said.
One look at Barkley’s team reveals that he clearly went with his five favorite individual players, or at least the players he believes to be the greatest of all time.
The lineup Barkley presented would certainly be formidable, but with three centers on the floor the spacing leaves a bit to be desired. The team would have an incredible height advantage with Jordan being the shortest player at 6’6″.
Another interesting point about Barkley’s five is that no players from after his retirement are included.
There have certainly been transcendent players in the NBA since Barkley left it, but he didn’t feel like adding any of them to his all-time starting lineup.
