Charlie Adam has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after reportedly striking a tree in the early hours of Monday morning.

The former Liverpool midfielder, who is captain of Scottish Premiership side Dundee, was supposedly travelling on the Dundee to Broughty Ferry road when the incident happened at 4.25am on Monday.

Pictures from the scene appear to show a damaged tree trunk.

Adam – who turned 36 last Friday – was arrested and charged. A report will be sent to prosecutors.

Police Scotland released a statement saying: “Shortly after 4.25am on Monday, December 13, 2021 a 36-year-old man was arrested and charged for a road traffic offence in Dundee Road West, Dundee.

“A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”

A Dundee FC spokesperson said: “We are aware of the incident but will be making no further comment.”

The Sun report a local who lives near the scene as saying: “I heard a loud bang outside and then silence.

“I didn’t think much more of it because you hear cars going up and down that road all the time.

“It wasn’t until the next morning I noticed a big gouge out of the tree. I was just hoping no one had been hurt.”

Charlie Adam helped Dundee seal promotion to the Scottish Premiership in his first season at the club

Dundee, who are tenth in the Cinch Premiership, travel to Hibernian on Tuesday night.

Former Rangers and Blackpool man Adam was unlikely to play anyway after he suffered an injury in Dundee’s 3-2 loss to Ross County on Saturday.

He exited the game after just 12 minutes and the club are said to be awaiting results from a scan.

Adam joined the Dens Park outfit in the summer of 2020 and helped them achieve promotion to the top flight.

Charlie Adam spent just over a year at Liverpool

Only this month the midfielder, who has won 26 Scotland caps, spoke openly and honestly about his brother’s health concerns.

Speaking to the Scotsman, he said: “My younger brother just below me has been in and out of hospital and was on a life support machine for five days during the season – just about six to eight weeks ago.

“It suddenly became critical. I had that for a good week or so. He was in a bad, bad way. It was touch and go. He is on the mend now, but it was tough.

“He is 27 years of age and has lost his eyesight. He has a guide dog, all through diabetes.

“Listen, it has been a tough time but everyone has tough times. We are not crying from the rooftops. We try to get on with it and deal with it as well as we can.”
