Hunting down cheap vegetarian meals is getting easier each year as more and more chains support the lifestyle. Turns out a national favourite is supplying the most affordable meat-free meals

There are an estimated 7.2 million Brits following a meat-free diet as of 2022. According to Finder.com, another 8.8 million people plan on going vegetarian this year, the highest number in four years.

It should be noted that just 2% of people that vowed to go vegetarian in 2021 actually did so, so these figures are subject to change.

However, as of right now, 14% of the nation is veggie and many more are considering the switch during National Vegetarian Week.

For those new to the diet, it can be hard knowing where to go to get the cheapest vegetarian meals.

Thankfully, many chains have meals readily available and here are the top four in the UK.

Greggs

Many newbie vegetarians will be happy to hear that Greggs offers some of the cheapest veggie meals in the UK.

On average, they cost £2.83 with plenty of options to choose from.

One of the chain’s most popular snacks is their vegan sausage rolls, which for all intents and purposes tastes and looks identical to the original meat option.

There are plenty more vegetarian meals to choose from too, so at theses costs it is an obviously choice.

Taco Bell

Taco Bell may not be as popular a chain as Greggs, but it has proven to be a staple for students and young adults across the country.

The Mexican menu naturally offers plenty of veggie meals, with an average cost of £3.84.

This includes both a main and a side, so there is plenty of bang for your buck.

McDonald’s

This one might not be too surprising as McDonald’s has championed veggie alternatives for years.

The chain is a global favourite with more than 1,200 restaurants in the UK alone.

It hits the third spot on this list, with an average meal cost setting you back £4.68.

The ‘McPlant’ burger was launched in October 2021, meaning there is a veggie option for almost all the chain’s classic choices.

Subway

Subway dominated the world over the last decade for its affordable sandwiches and offer the consumer exactly what they are looking for.

While there are some set veggie options, people can pick and choose exactly what they would like in their meals, making almost any option veggie friendly.

An average meal here will set you back £6.69, which also includes a drink.
