Chelsea players were reportedly left in shock on Sunday night when they learnt of Graham Potter’s departure through the club’s statement on social media. Potter has already become the second head coach Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital have sacked in their 11-month ownership.
On Sunday, Chelsea confirmed that Potter had been dismissed after helming just 22 Premier League games, winning seven.
The Blues have dropped from sixth to 11th since he replaced Thomas Tuchel in September, but many expected him to be given the remainder of the season, at least.
News of his Stamford Bridge exit caused shockwaves across social media, despite the toothless manner of the 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa a day prior.
And according to The Telegraph, many of Potter’s Chelsea squad were also kept in the dark about his imminent future and left ‘stunned and worried’ after the announcement.
Players are said to have instantly contacted their representatives in search of answers after the 8pm bombshell.
Those who featured in Saturday’s loss at home to Villa were at the club’s Cobham training base for a recovery session on Sunday, while others trained as normal.
However, most of the squad were unaware of Potter’s impending doom before they returned home to discover his fate online.
A Telegraph source said: “Most of the players had no idea until they saw the statement.
“People were asking who would be taking training on Monday and who is in charge for Tuesday.
“Virtually all of them were in recovery or training on Sunday, so they were shocked to find this out at home.”
The report adds that Stewart and Paul Winstanley, Chelsea’s sporting directors, were the primary drivers behind the decision to give Potter the chop.
It’s claimed that the wheels were set in motion by 3pm on Sunday, likely while the squad would have been at the training ground.
Co-controlling owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali were fully supportive of the call, still in the hope that Chelsea can salvage their horror season by winning the Champions League.
