Chelsea and Man Utd target Nkunku picks next club and ‘accepts offer’

French forward Christopher Nkunku has reportedly chosen to join Chelsea amid interest from Manchester United. Paris Saint-Germain are also thought to be interested in the versatile playmaker, having sold him in 2019.

Nkunku was one of the most talked about players over the summer due to his impressive campaign at RB Leipzig. The forward scored 20 and assisted 13 in 34 Bundesliga appearances last season, and has continued in that rich vein of form recently, scoring six in eight.

Manchester United and Liverpool were amongst those referenced as holding an interest in the 24-year-old, though Chelsea appear to have stolen the initiative in the race to secure his signature. Reports have emerged that he has already completed his medical prior to a move, though a deal has not been reached between the Blues and Leipzig, leaving the door open for other interested parties.

However, Ekrem Konur reports that Nkunku has ‘accepted Chelsea’s offer’ despite there being several different offers on the table for him. PSG and United are cited as those who were in the race to sign the forward over the summer.

Chelsea spent most of the summer investing in their defence, having lost Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen on free transfers. They acquired the services of Marc Cucurella, Kalidou Koulibaly and Wesley Fofana – with the Stamford Bridge outfit now looking set for the foreseeable future in that department.

Now, with Graham Potter in charge, the attack is likely to become the priority as the former Brighton boss looks for a touch of class and versatility in the final third. Nkunku fits the bill in that regard, with his ability to play as a No 10, on either wing and as a striker providing plenty of options for his next manager.

Nkunku has a £52million release clause in his contract, though Chelsea are expected to attempt a lower price deal with Leipzig – using that clause as a last resort. The France international’s arrival will put the pressure on the Blues’ attacking options currently, with summer signings Raheem Sterling and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang both still adjusting to life at Stamford Bridge.

Potter was able to secure his first Premier League victory of his tenure at Chelsea, beating Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park. Conor Gallagher, who spent last season on loan with the Eagles, came off of the bench to score the all-important winner in added time to stake his claim as to why he should be firmly in his new manager’s plans.
