A north vs south Premier League All-Star game to raise money for the English Football League has been pitched by Chelsea co-owner and chairman Todd Boehly.
The American businessman led a consortium in buying Chelsea last season and has already made big changes at Stamford Bridge, spending huge amounts of money in the transfer market and replacing manager Thomas Tuchel with Graham Potter.
He has wider ambitions, hoping to influence English football with his experience from American sport, which he feels the Premier League can learn from.
The annual All-Star games in the likes of the NBA (basketball), MLB (baseball), NFL (American Football’s Pro Bowl) and MLS (soccer) are huge events which make a lot of money and Boehly thinks the Premier League could do the same and put the cash to good use down the football pyramid.
‘Ultimately I hope the Premier League takes a little bit of a lesson from American sports,’ said Boehly at the SALT Conference. ‘And really starts to figure out, why don’t we do a tournament with the bottom four sports teams, why isn’t there an All-Star game?
‘People are talking about more money for the pyramid, in the MLB All-Star game this year we made 200 million dollars from a Monday and a Tuesday.
‘So we’re thinking we could do a north versus south All-Star game for the Premier League, for whatever the pyramid needed quite easily.’
Asked how the idea would be received in England, he added: ‘Everyone likes the idea of more revenue for the league.
‘I think there’s a real cultural aspect, I think evolution will come.’
