Chelsea’s failed move for Jules Kounde in the summer transfer window means they still have a large proportion of their transfer budget left to spend. And if recent reports are to be believed, transfer chief Marina Granovskaia has put the pieces in place in January to sign Napoli winger Lorenzo Insigne on a free.
The Blues spent £100million in the summer, predominantly on Romelu Lukaku to solve their striking woes.
A move for Saul Niguez was also completed on deadline day as the European champions beefed up their midfield – though the Spaniard has barely played and could have his loan cut short.
Chelsea have enjoyed a great start to the season and sit top of the Premier League, but that has not stopped Granovskaia looking for ways to improve Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
According to Marca, Insigne could be next in line for a move to west London, with Chelsea able to offer him a pre-contract in just over a month’s time.
Insigne, 30, has played at Napoli for his entire career, scoring 114 goals in 411 games for the Gli Azzurri.
Achieving his best-ever individual season last campaign with 19 league goals in just 35 games, Insigne established himself as one of the most sought-after wingers in Europe.
He added to his prowess with a winner’s medal at Euro 2020 following Italy’s win in the final over England.
And with just seven months left on his Napoli contract, the diminutive winger could be in line for a move to Stamford Bridge.
The report states that the Blues are considering moves for Kounde and Matthijs De Ligt in a bid to import youth into an ageing back-line.
And Chelsea are also interested in a free transfer for Insigne next summer, knowing they could get an agreement in place in January.
Having sold Kurt Zouma, Marc Guehi and Fikayo Tomori in the summer months, Chelsea could be left short at the back given several important defenders’ contracts expire in just seven months.
Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Thiago Silva’s futures are all in the balance.
Thomas Tuchel remained calm on the size of his squad in a recent press conference.
“You cannot have a squad with four, five, six, seven key [attacking] players and three of them constantly waiting for another three to get injured. This does not exist in real life,” Tuchel said.
“I’m happy with the guys who are on the pitch tomorrow [against Newcastle] and I trust the guys who are on the pitch.
“It is a bit of a stretch, the group is tested but okay, so it’s a test. We want to make it and prove that we are a strong group and can compensate for situations like this.”
