Harry Maguire was on the scoresheet for England for the second match in a row on Monday night and Chelsea legend John Terry was quick to praise him after his own record was broken.
In the clash with Albania, Maguire tied Terry’s record for most goals by a defender for the national team of six, but an early header against San Marino edged the Manchester United man ahead with seven.
But Maguire’s good form with England is in contrast to that at Old Trafford, where he has come in for heavy criticism in recent weeks, not least from former Red Devils’ captain Roy Keane.
The Irishman was not happy with the way Maguire celebrated his goal against Albania on Friday night, putting his fingers to his ears in what many interpreted as a message to his critics.
“When a player scores and puts his hands to his ears he’s shutting the critics up, but I think that’s embarrassing, he’s been a disgrace to Man United. He thinks he scores there he’s shut his critics up, embarrassing,” he said during ITV’s coverage of the match.
But after Maguire found the net again on Monday, Terry congratulated him and had a sly dig at Keane at the same time.
“@HarryMaguire93 Congratulations mate. @England Highest scoring defender,” he wrote on Twitter.
“Let’s see if a few of these pundits talk about that.”
However, while it is a message Maguire will have been pleased to read, it is not one that all Chelsea fans necessarily agreed with.
Many of them replied to the tweet to let Terry know they disagreed with him, predominantly pointing to the fact that goals against Albania and San Marino should not cover up recent club displays.
Here is the best of the reaction:
@Folarin said: “Oh brother…”
@ChelseaIsta said: “Are you ok man?”
@Stanleey said: “He’s a terrible defender, terry. Scoring goals is not a pass for a relegation champion!!”
