Chelsea insider’s foul-mouthed rant says it all about next boss search

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has come in for criticism following his handling of the club since taking over at Stamford Bridge last year. The American sacked Thomas Tuchel, who had won the Champions League with the Blues less than two years before his dismissal, replacing him with Graham Potter as part of the new long-term vision from the hierarchy.

However, the former Brighton man lasted just 206 days at the helm. Boehly and co had paid a record fee to sign Potter, gave him an enormous long-term contract that echoed the deals handed to several expensive January signings, before axing him to another large pay-out.

Bruno Saltor remained from Potter’s staff to take charge of the goalless draw with Liverpool, before Frank Lampard was sensationally brought back to the club – just over two years after his own Chelsea sacking. He returned to the dugout for the 1-0 defeat away to Wolves on Saturday but is not expected to retain the position beyond this season.

Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique are just two of several names being mentioned with the full-time gig, as the executive staff surrounding Boehly have yet another huge decision to make regarding the future of Chelsea. However, the attempts to find a long-term successor to Lampard appear to be proving difficult, according to club insiders with a telling insight.

“It’s a f****** mess, of course it is,” a source close to the Chelsea executives said this week to the Daily Mail. “No one is pretending this was the plan.”

Chelsea had expected Potter to be at the helm for several years, but with a lack of improvement and the Blues in 11th place, they felt that a decision had to be made to dismiss the 47-year-old. Lampard was surprisingly tasked with the remainder of the season, only after Boehly took advice from a surprise candidate despite the wealth of footballing experience at the club.

Former Gavin and Stacey star James Corden gave his opinion to pal Boehly, which was listened to and The Late Late Show host’s pick of choice was named as interim boss in Lampard.

Meanwhile, alongside Nagelsmann and Enrique, the likes of Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Ruben Amorim, Oliver Glasner, Mauricio Pochettino and Nuno Espirito Santo have been mentioned with the Chelsea job as an exhaustive process is set to be held before a permanent successor is named.

Technical and sporting directors Christopher Vivell, Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart are leading the search for the next boss, though Boehly will likely have a say amid the tumultuous season that has seen as many as four different coaches lead Chelsea from the touchline this season.
