Chelsea have expressed an interest in signing Bayern Munich midfielder Benjamin Pavard, with the German giants overtaking them in the race to sign first-choice target Matthijs de Ligt.

Having lost both Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, the Blues are desperate for signings at the back with Thomas Tuchel eager to bring in at least two centre-halves this summer.

Juventus star de Ligt has emerged as the club’s top target with Chelsea negotiating a fee with the Serie A giants.

However, recent reports claim Bayern have now entered the race with a move to Germany now the defender’s preferred destination.

Chelsea have also been linked with moves for Jules Kounde and Presnel Kimpembe with the club also in talks to sign Nathan Ake from Manchester City.

But according to Sky Germany, they are now positioning themselves in move for France international Pavard.

The 26-year-old spent much of last season operating at right-back, with added competition in that role next season following the arrival of Noussair Mazraoui from Ajax.

Pavard, part of France’s 2018 World Cup-winning side, is eager to establish himself at centre-half but Bayern’s interest in de Ligt could further hamper his opportunities there.

Bayern are open to letting the former Stuttgart defender go this summer with Sky Germany naming Chelsea among the clubs interested in his services with Atletico Madrid and Juventus also monitoring the situation.

Pavard has two more years left on his contract in Germany.
