Chelsea ‘make decision on Willian return’ as transfer details come to light

Chelsea have turned down the chance to re-sign Willian, it has been claimed. The Brazil international previously spent seven years in the capital between 2013 and 2020. However, while he impressed for Fulham last season, a return to Stamford Bridge isn’t on the cards.

Willian joined Fulham last year from Corinthians following the Cottagers’ promotion to the Premier League.

And the Brazil international dazzled in west London last term, scoring five goals and clocking up 10 assists from 27 Premier League matches.

Right now, Willian’s future at Craven Cottage is up in the air.

The veteran is currently a free agent and, according to Di Marzio, has turned down a new Fulham contract as he considers his options.

It’s also said that Willian has been offered to Chelsea but the Blues have turned down the chance to re-sign the winger.

Given their huge squad, that’s perhaps understandable.

Chelsea are well-stocked for wingers right now, even if Callum Hudson-Odoi is poised to join Christian Pulisic out of the exit door.

Over the past year they’ve reinforced that area of their squad with deals for the likes of Raheem Sterling, Mykhaylo Mudryk and Noni Madueke.

And it’ll be interesting to see what happens with Willian, who is also attracting interest from other Premier League clubs.

Many thought the 34-year-old would never shine in the top flight again following a poor stint with Arsenal.

But Willian rediscovered his mojo and is now an appealing player for clubs to sign.

Nottingham Forest are interested in the stalwart, having managed to avoid relegation last season.

Speaking in 2021, Willian revealed he was never happy at Arsenal after leaving Chelsea for their rivals.

“I wasn’t happy, I wasn’t happy. That’s why I didn’t perform. I don’t want to go into the details,” Willian told Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel Five.

“When I arrived there I was happy, from the beginning I was motivated, I wanted to do well – new club, new mates, new project.

“But after three months, I said to my agent: ‘Please, I want to go’. I don’t want to speak bad about the club, because it is a big club. Arsenal has a big history.

“In football, big players played there before as well. But it didn’t work, it didn’t work. It was, of course, the most difficult time of my career.

“It was big money that I gave up. But sometimes money is not the most important thing in life.

“I think you need to be happy, get pleasure every day waking up in the morning to go to train. I wasn’t having that.

“So I said to myself, with my family, I cannot stay here, I am not happy here. I have to leave, find a way out, leave the club, because if I stay I am going to stay the same.

“For me, it’s unfair to stay in a place that you don’t want to stay just because of the money.

“For me, it was that.”
