And Chelsea clearly see Shields as an ideal addition to the recruitment team after spending over £40m this summer on talent for their development squad.
Carney Chukwuemeka and Cesare Casadei were the big-money arrivals from Aston Villa and Inter Miilan for £20m and £15m respectively, while Dynamo Moscow playmaker Arsen Zakharyan looks set to join the club in January for a similar fee.
The club also acted on the advice of chief of youth development Neil Bath to bring in Omari Hutchinson, Eddie Beach, Zak Sturge and a host of other promising youngsters to bolster their academy sides.
And with Shields moving into a similar role to the one he has worked so effectively in at City and Southampton, Boehly will be hoping his work is coming to an end in terms of putting together his plan for the club’s long-term future.
