Chelsea star Noni Madueke left Levi Colwill in an awkward situation on Saturday after telling fans that his Blues team-mate would be returning to Stamford Bridge this summer. Madueke’s message went out to fans live on social media as Colwill recorded a celebratory video in the aftermath of England’s European Under-21 Championship final victory over Spain.
Colwill was in inspired form throughout the Euros and appeared in his country’s starting line-up for the showpiece event after starting four of their five tournament matches. The 20-year-old almost opened the scoring for the Young Lions as he cannoned a first half header against the crossbar. And he produced a stand-out performance once again as England won the match 1-0 courtesy of a goal from Curtis Jones at the end of the first half.
After the final whistle had blown, Colwill took to Instagram to bring fans closer to the carnival-like celebrations at the Adjarabet Arena in Georgia. And Madueke took the opportunity to hijack the defender’s live video.
“What have you got to say brother?” Colwill asked as Madueke dived into the video and put his arm around the centre-back. “Come on man – hey listen, we’re both coming back,” came the reply from the winger. “He is as well. Listen, I will make sure he comes back. Do you get it?”
Colwill was far from happy with Madueke’s promises and wriggled away from his team-mate’s grasp as soon as he could before telling viewers: “This guy bro. This guy.”
Colwill came through the Chelsea academy and impressed during a loan spell with Huddersfield in the Championship during the 2021/22 campaign as he helped the Yorkshire club reach the play-off final. The centre-back was then shipped out to Brighton last season and took his game to the next level as he helped the Seagulls finish sixth in the Premier League table.
Colwill’s temporary spell on the south coast came to an end at the start of the summer and he is due to go back to Chelsea ahead of the new campaign. But the youngster is thought to be desperate for first-team football and could be keen to move away from west London if a suitable offer comes his way.
Brighton reportedly had a £30million bid for the star rejected by Chelsea at the start of last month. And in the last few days, Liverpool have emerged as potential suitors as they look to bolster their defence following a dismal campaign. Colwill may fancy his chances of breaking into the Reds team under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp rather than staying in the capital after so far failing to even register a first-team appearance for his current employers. And the youngster will be hoping Merseyside chiefs take Madueke’s comments with a pinch of salt if they really are keen to sign him.
