Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel could be blessed with a refreshed playing squad if the Blues can pull off a lucrative double swoop in the January transfer window. The proposed duo, which will reportedly set the club back in the region of £72million, could see Tuchel and his side kick on as they attempt to close the gap on Manchester City and Liverpool before the season concludes. Express Sport looks at how the German could set out his side in the event of a fruitful few weeks.
Midfield: Kante, Kovacic
With an enviable mix of youth, talent and experience in the middle of the park, Tuchel has generally been spoilt for choice this season.
Jorginho and N’Golo Kante both came in the top five of the 2021 Ballon d’Or voting, while Mateo Kovacic has also performed superbly when called upon.
The Italian’s metronomic passing and penalty prowess make him a great option for the Blues, but Kovacic’s dynamism and technical ability may give him the extra edge once he fully recovers from a Covid-related absence.
The likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley are also waiting in the wings for more chances, with just two midfield spots up for grabs at Stamford Bridge.
Attack: Mount, Lukaku, Pulisic
Chelsea’s attack has routinely been shuffled around this season, with injuries to Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner forcing changes.
Thankfully for Tuchel and co., the big Belgian is slowly being phased back into action after twisting his ankle in October, which will give him the chance to build on the five-goal haul he has managed so far this campaign.
To the right of him, Mason Mount has come into a spell of exemplary form, and the 22-year-old now leads the way for the Blues in Premier League scoring.
The spot on the left remains broadly up for grabs, and while Callum Hudson-Odoi, Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz could all state a reasonable case, a run in the team for Christian Pulisic could finally yield consistency after flashes of his quality in west London thus far.
