Fans of stocky off-road midsize trucks with a factory warranty are currently spoilt for choice, given the breadth of machines on offer such as the GMC Canyon AT4X and upcoming Ford Ranger Raptor. Now, the bowtie brand is one-upping itself, seemingly once again set to layer the Bison trim atop its brutish Colorado ZR2.

Quick history lesson for those in the back row: the previous-gen Colorado ZR2 Bison was a collab between Chevrolet and American Expedition Vehicles. Meant to offer customers an upgraded version of the already capable Colorado ZR2, the Bison was essentially the result of AEV’s owner Dave Harriton being asked what he’d add to a stock ZR2 for off-roading. The truck showed up in 2019 with beefier skid plates, steel bumpers with winch provisions and recovery points, extra lighting, and the expected graphics package.

This time around, it is expected the ZR2 Bison will carry similar gear, though this generation ZR2 is already leaps and bounds ahead of the old truck — especially in terms of power. When it shows up on dealer lots, look for bigger tires (the ones on this test mule could be 35s) along with beadlock wheels and a taller ride height. Expect angrier styling as well, though the ZR2 does a decent job of intimidating off-road obstacles out of its way as it sits, especially with the optional Desert Boss package.

Speaking of, adding a ZR2 Bison to the mix means the Colorado will have a plethora of off-road options: Trail Boss, Z71, ZR2, ZR2 Desert Boss, and ZR2 Bison. It’s like when your favourite artist remixes their hit track a bunch of different ways.

Colorado’s big brother, the Silverado, has a Bison package of its own to layer atop the ZR2 trim, priced at $8,995 and including most of the gear mentioned above. Last year’s Bison package on the old Colorado cost $7,475; let’s split the difference and say this year’s offering will be around eight grand. Power is likely to remain at ZR2 levels, meaning a 2.7L turbocharged engine with a high-output tune making 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque.
